June 26, 2016, Log Cabin Day on Old Mission Peninsula.
Log Cabin Day will be celebrated statewide on Sunday, June 26, 2016, at
historic log cabin sites across Michigan. The centerpiece of the local
observance is the Hessler Log Cabin at Lighthouse Park at the tip of the
Old Mission Peninsula. The log cabin will be open, and music, historic
crafts and demonstrations will be featured. This year, the Maritime
Heritage Alliance will display the Gracie L (Michigan Boat) on a trailer
and also a voyageur canoe. Hours are 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Hosted by the
Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society (OMPHS), the event is free.
Tours of adjacent Mission Point Lighthouse will be available. During this
event, proceeds from the lighthouse tours will be dedicated to the OMPHS.
In nearby Old Mission, visitors are welcomed at the historic Dougherty
Mission House. Since last year, the house was raised and a new foundation
installed. The house, the restored summer kitchen, ice house, restored
outhouse, and grounds will be available for viewing. The event will be
hosted by the Peter Dougherty Society (PDS) and there is no charge. An Ice
Cream Social will be held and the proceeds will be used for further work at
the site. Hours are 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
